About
Cheryl and Les Thomas live in Northwest Travis County near Austin, with a view of the Texas Hill Country at their backdoor. For this book, they traveled more than 3,000 miles through backroads and small towns, looking for hidden gems, untold stories, and secrets of this beloved and scenic Texas region that stretches west of Austin and San Antonio.
They are both lifelong Texans and writers, who met after college when they were reporters at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Cheryl taught English in public schools for more than 30 years and worked part-time as a wire service reporter. Les joined Southern Living magazine where he spent more than three decades traveling Texas and the South as a travel editor and senior writer. Les is a longtime member of the Society of American Travel Writers. He has won a number of writing awards and has been honored with the Governor’s Award from the Texas Department of Tourism for contributions to the state’s tourism industry.
“We’re fortunate to be able to go on vacation in our own backyard,” Cheryl and Les say. “Secret Hill Country was a treasure hunt and a whole lot of fun to research and write. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did.”
